Spring Equinox Serpent!!!
I decided to learn more about the Spring Equinox that occurred today. The spring and autumn equinoxes is when there are twelve hours of daylight and twelve hours of night. They are equal. I knew about this part. I wanted to learn more about some little known facts about this day of the year. In Mexico, the pyramid at Chichen Itza (El Castillo) was engineered by the Mayas so that during the spring and autumn equinoxes, sunlight creates an illusion of a giant serpent slithering down the steps! There is a carved image of a giant serpent head at the bottom of the steps. The Mayas had a reverence for a feathered serpent deity called Kukulkan. The engineers who designed the pyramid wanted to pay homage. The really neat part of this is that it only lasts for 45-90 minutes in late afternoon! This is a huge tourist attraction during the spring and autumn equinoxes. To learn more, watch the YouTube video or click the image below!
